St. Catharines resident Bob Trinder will celebrate his 100th birthday on October 11th, and he’s doing it in style – on the golf course. Trinder, a familiar face at the St. Catharines Golf and Country Club, has been enjoying the game for decades and shows no signs of slowing down.
Trinder, who started playing golf in St. Catharines in 1968, has been a member at the club for 30 years. He still plays four times a week with friends and even enjoys a game with world curling champion Marilyn Bodogh.
“I’m fortunate,” Trinder said, “I’m very, very lucky. I must have good genes. I’ve also had a great life.”
Despite his age, Trinder maintains a competitive spirit. He now plays nine holes in the morning to avoid the afternoon heat and opts for the senior tees, but he still manages to shoot a respectable 51. “I don’t hit the ball far, but I’m OK on the green,” he explained.
His dedication to the game is admired by his fellow golfers, and the club starter, Malcolm Bradshaw, calls Trinder “fabulous.”
Trinder’s life is full of accomplishments. A veteran of both World War II and the Korean War, he worked as an engineer at Ford Motor Co. before settling in St. Catharines with Thompson Products Ltd. He has been married twice and has a large family, including 23 great-grandchildren.
And though he’s turned 100, Trinder doesn’t plan on giving up his favorite pastime. “I will continue to play golf as long as I can still swing the club,” he said. “I’m feeling great. I like the great fellowship and it’s great to get outside. I’m enjoying everything.”
Trinder’s story is a testament to the power of a healthy lifestyle and a positive attitude. He’s proof that age is just a number and that a passion for life can last a lifetime.
