Fri Sep 13 16:55:57 UTC 2024: ## Heritage Structure in Hyderabad Faces Neglect Despite Restoration Promises

**Hyderabad, India** – Despite promises of restoration, the historic Badshahi Ashoorkhana, a Qutub Shahi era structure in Hyderabad, remains in a state of neglect. Built in 1594 by Mohammad Quli Qutub Shah, the Ashoorkhana is a significant historical landmark and was once adorned with colored mosaic tiles.

An agreement was reached in May 2023 between the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), the Department of Heritage, and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) for the restoration of the Ashoorkhana, Saidanima Tomb, and Shaikpet Sarai. While the Saidanima Tomb has been restored, work on the other two structures has stalled.

The restoration of the Ashoorkhana’s drum house was initially expected to be completed soon, and work on the main building was to be accelerated. However, sources reveal that the project has been halted due to a lack of funds.

Ratish Nanda, CEO of AKTC, confirmed that the works haven’t commenced yet, stating that the reason lies with HMDA and the Department of Heritage.

Mir Abbas Ali Musavi, the caretaker of the Ashoorkhana, expressed frustration at the lack of progress. He highlighted the planned restoration work on the drum house and the roof of the main building, which included plans to reduce the roof weight and add supporting iron pillars. However, no official plans were submitted to him.

The Ashoorkhana has been a target of land mafia and political interference, with previous attempts to restore the site facing delays. This history has led to concerns that the current government may also be complicit in delaying the restoration.

The recent restoration of the Qutub Shahi Heritage Park by AKTC, attended by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, raised hopes that the government would prioritize heritage preservation. However, officials from HMDA and the Department of Heritage have refused to comment on the situation.

The Badshahi Ashoorkhana’s continued neglect raises serious concerns about the government’s commitment to protecting Hyderabad’s rich heritage. The delay in restoration raises questions about transparency and accountability, leaving the future of this significant historical landmark uncertain.
