Sat Sep 14 14:57:45 UTC 2024: ## Leclerc Claims Pole in Baku, Norris’s Penalty Could Shake Up Title Race

Baku, Azerbaijan – Charles Leclerc secured pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, marking his fourth consecutive pole at the street circuit. The Ferrari driver dominated qualifying, beating out McLaren’s Oscar Piastri by 0.3 seconds.

Leclerc’s triumph could prove crucial in the championship battle as McLaren’s Lando Norris will start the race from the back of the grid due to a penalty. The British driver was found to have exceeded the permitted fuel flow during qualifying.

“We were in conversation with the FIA as to why that happened because the yellow flag isn’t necessary when it’s just a slow car, it’s off-line,” McLaren team principal Andrea Stella said. “We paid the price.”

The penalty sets the stage for a dramatic race, with Norris facing a long climb through the field. This could potentially give Red Bull drivers Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez, who qualified fifth and fourth respectively, a significant advantage.

Verstappen and Perez had a difficult qualifying session, with Verstappen struggling for pace and Pérez outperforming his teammate. The two Red Bull drivers will need to be at their best if they are to challenge Leclerc for the victory.

The race also saw a surprising performance from Williams, who placed both their drivers in the top ten. Logan Sargeant and rookie Franco Colapinto both reached Q3, highlighting the team’s strong straight-line speed.

Despite the drama, Leclerc will be confident heading into the race, as he looks to finally claim victory at the Baku circuit.
