Thu Sep 12 06:37:00 UTC 2024: ## Phuket Crowned World’s Most Overcrowded Destination as Tourism Booms

**Phuket, Thailand** – The island paradise of Phuket has been named the world’s most overcrowded destination, according to a new study from MoneyTransfers.com. The popular Thai hotspot boasts a staggering 118 tourists for every local resident, highlighting the growing issue of over-tourism.

Phuket, known for its stunning beaches and vibrant nightlife, has experienced a surge in visitors following the post-COVID travel rebound. This influx has led to concerns about the impact on local communities and the environment.

One visitor, who described their recent trip to Phuket on Tripadvisor, expressed their dismay at the overwhelming crowds: “Nothing could have prepared me for the hordes of people crowding the island, the beaches, and the day tours to outlying islands,” they wrote. “If you love wall to wall people, go to Phuket, but if not, I suggest you look for some less crowded places in the region.”

The issue of over-tourism is not unique to Phuket. Venice, another popular destination, recently announced a new tourist tax designed to curb visitor numbers. Thailand, too, introduced a tourist tax in April, charging £6.60 on all airline tickets entering the country. This measure is aimed at managing the influx of tourists after a significant drop in visitor numbers during the pandemic.

Heraklion, a popular destination in Greece, also made the list of overcrowded destinations, with 22 tourists to every local resident. Venice, unsurprisingly, found itself in the top 10, with 21 tourists to every resident.

As travel continues to rebound, the issue of over-tourism is likely to remain a hot topic. Destinations like Phuket are faced with the challenge of balancing economic growth with the need to protect local communities and the environment.
