**SEOUL, South Korea** – North Korea launched multiple short-range ballistic missiles towards the East Sea on Thursday, marking its first missile launch since July 1. The timing of the launch, coinciding with Russia-China military exercises and the first US presidential debate, is seen by analysts as a calculated move designed to advance both domestic and global interests.
Experts believe the missile launches are a demonstration of force, intended to show solidarity with Russia and China, particularly as their joint military exercises, dubbed “Ocean-2024”, are underway. Furthermore, the launch comes just a day after the first US presidential debate, raising concerns about North Korea’s potential interference in the election.
Professor Yang Moo-jin of the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul, stated, “The timing of the launches, immediately following the US presidential debate, suggests this could be the first step in North Korea’s attempt to interfere in the election. We can expect an escalation in the level of provocations moving forward.”
The missile launches also signal a shift back to weapons development, aligning with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s five-year military development plan unveiled in 2021. Following a period of focus on flood recovery efforts, North Korea appears to be prioritizing its military objectives once again.
Professor Lim Eul-chul of Kyungnam University in Seoul commented, “This doesn’t seem to be an extraordinary provocation. Following the severe flooding that began in late July, North Korea channeled all its resources into recovery efforts… Consequently, the country now appears to be refocusing on unfinished military objectives.”
In his speech commemorating the 76th founding anniversary of the regime, Kim Jong-un emphasized the importance of strengthening North Korea’s nuclear capabilities and maintaining full combat readiness.
The Unification Ministry condemned North Korea’s actions, stating that the regime’s focus on military provocations undermines its claims of prioritizing its people’s well-being. The ministry emphasized that North Korea’s continued missile launches demonstrate the hollowness of its “people-first” propaganda.
In addition to the missile launches, North Korea has been engaging in a series of escalating provocations against South Korea. These include sending trash-filled balloons towards the South, broadcasting strange noises through loudspeakers near the border, and attempting to interfere in South Korean elections. These actions are seen by Seoul as a deliberate attempt to destabilize the region and undermine the South Korean government.
