**WASHINGTON** – In an effort to prevent a repeat of the January 6th, 2021 attack on the Capitol, the US government will significantly enhance security measures for the congressional certification of the November 5th election results.
The Department of Homeland Security has classified the certification process as a “national special security event,” the Secret Service announced Wednesday. This designation allows for the mobilization of federal, state, and local resources to ensure a secure environment for the event. The Secret Service will be leading the security planning and implementation.
The move comes after recommendations from both a congressional investigation and a watchdog inquiry into the 2021 Capitol riots. These investigations highlighted security vulnerabilities that allowed supporters of former President Donald Trump to breach the Capitol building in a failed attempt to disrupt the certification of President Joe Biden’s victory.
Trump, who is seeking the Republican nomination for the 2024 presidential election, faces incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris in a closely contested race, according to polls. Trump’s claims of election fraud in 2020 led to his supporters storming the Capitol, and he has been indicted for attempting to overturn his election loss.
The enhanced security measures for the 2024 election certification aim to safeguard the democratic process and prevent a recurrence of the violence that shook the nation two years ago.
