**JORHAT, INDIA -** Former fighter pilot Mohonto Panging Pao, a pioneer from the northeastern region to serve as a group captain in the Indian Air Force, emphasized the crucial role of northeastern individuals in nation-building during his speech at the 11th foundation day celebration of Assam Women’s University on Monday.

Addressing the students, Pao encouraged them to embrace their roots and actively participate in entrepreneurship, particularly in key industries, to drive socioeconomic development in the region. He also shared his personal experiences as a fighter pilot, highlighting the importance of overcoming challenges and staying committed to aspirations.

The foundation day event began with the hoisting of the university flag by Professor Ajanta Borgohain Rajkonwar, the vice chancellor. In her speech, she outlined the university’s recent achievements and acknowledged the contributions of those who have played a part in its establishment and growth since 2014.

Several dignitaries, including Dr Bidyut Chandan Deka, vice chancellor of Assam Agricultural University, and Dr Ashok Bhattacharyya, former director of Research at Assam Agricultural University, praised the university’s progress and congratulated the students, faculty, and staff on its 10th anniversary.

The event also included cultural performances by students and the release of two publications: ‘Sojourner,’ an annual poetry magazine, and ‘Sakhyor,’ a compilation documenting the university’s journey over the past decade.

In the morning, the university’s Women’s Cell organized a street play in front of the Jorhat District Commissioner’s Office to raise awareness about sexual harassment against women, aligning with the university’s commitment to empowerment and social justice.

The celebration marks a significant milestone for the only women’s university in the region, emphasizing its dedication to academic excellence and its role in shaping the future of northeastern India.
