Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was released from Tihar Jail on Friday after spending nearly six months behind bars. The release came after the Supreme Court granted him bail in a corruption case filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the alleged Delhi liquor scam.
Kejriwal addressed a crowd of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supporters who had been waiting for hours in heavy rainfall. He thanked God and the people for their support, stating that his morale had been boosted by his time in prison.
“They put me in jail, they thought putting Kejriwal behind the bars will break his morale. Today, I want to tell you that I have come out of jail, my morale has boosted 100 times. My strength has increased 100 times,” Kejriwal said.
He vowed to continue fighting against “anti-national forces” attempting to weaken the country.
The Supreme Court, while granting bail, imposed restrictions on Kejriwal’s activities. He is prohibited from making public statements about the case, visiting his office or the Delhi Secretariat, and signing official files unless absolutely necessary with the Lieutenant Governor’s sanction.
Kejriwal was arrested by the CBI on June 26th. He had challenged the Delhi High Court’s order upholding his arrest in the Supreme Court. He was also granted interim bail in a money laundering case filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on July 12th.
