**WASHINGTON -** Young women are embracing liberal views at an unprecedented rate, according to a new Gallup analysis, emerging as a potent political force with the potential to influence elections.
The study, which analyzed polling data over two decades, revealed that nearly 40% of women aged 18-29 now identify as liberal, a significant jump from the 30% who self-identified as such two decades ago. This shift isn’t just a matter of labels; it’s a reflection of a genuine shift in their political stances.
Young women are increasingly embracing liberal views on key issues such as the environment, abortion rights, race relations, and gun control, with support for each increasing by double digits.
“This isn’t just about identifying as liberal because it’s trendy or because someone they admire uses the term,” said Lydia Saad, director of U.S. social research at Gallup. “They have actually become much more liberal in their actual viewpoints.”
This growing liberal ideology could make young women a powerful force in elections, particularly given their growing unity on key issues, according to Saad. While Democratic candidates have traditionally enjoyed support from this demographic, voter turnout among young women has sometimes been inconsistent.
The shift in young women’s political views appears to have accelerated around the election of Donald Trump, the rise of the #MeToo movement, and increasing efforts to restrict abortion access. The growing presence of women in positions of political power, particularly Democrats, has also likely influenced this shift, providing role models and representation.
This evolving political landscape is evident in recent endorsements, such as Taylor Swift’s support for Kamala Harris, highlighting the importance of reproductive rights for young women. Gallup found that young women are now nearly 20% more likely to support broad abortion rights compared to the Obama era, with similar increases in support for environmental protection and stricter gun laws.
“You’ve got supermajorities of women holding these views,” Saad said, “and they are primed to be activated to vote on these issues.” The growing dissatisfaction among young women regarding the country’s approach to these issues could further motivate them to participate in elections.
This evolving political landscape highlights the growing power of young women’s voices in shaping the future of American politics.
