**New Delhi:** In a landmark move to alleviate financial burdens faced by senior citizens, the Indian Cabinet has approved a major expansion of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY). This expansion extends health insurance coverage to all individuals aged 70 and above, regardless of their income or social status.

**Rs 5 Lakh Coverage for All Seniors:** Under the scheme, every senior citizen will be eligible for Rs 5 lakh in annual health insurance coverage. This comprehensive coverage aims to ensure access to vital healthcare services without financial strain.

**Top-up for Existing Beneficiaries:** Senior citizens already enrolled in an Ayushman Bharat plan will receive an additional Rs 5 lakh top-up coverage, further bolstering their financial protection against medical costs.

**Simplified Access with New Health Cards:** Each eligible senior will receive a dedicated health card, simplifying access to healthcare services and facilitating the utilization of benefits.

**Compatibility with Private Insurance:** Individuals with existing private health insurance can still benefit from the Ayushman Bharat scheme without any conflict.

**Choice for Enrolled Seniors:** Senior citizens currently enrolled in other public health schemes like the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) or Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) will have the option to choose between their current insurance and the new Ayushman Bharat coverage.

**Shared Funding Model:** The initial cost of this expansion is estimated at Rs 3,437 crore. The financial responsibility will be shared between the central and state governments, with the Centre contributing 60% and states covering 40% of the costs. For states in hilly and northeastern regions, the Centre will bear 90% of the expenditure.

This expansion signifies a significant step towards strengthening the healthcare safety net for senior citizens, ensuring their access to quality medical care without facing financial hardship.
