Tue Sep 10 13:37:57 UTC 2024: ## Venezuelan Opposition Loses Hope as Former Candidate Flees, Maduro Consolidates Power

**CARACAS/WASHINGTON** – The flight of former Venezuelan presidential candidate Edmundo Gonzalez has fueled a sense of despair among the Venezuelan opposition, with many voters now believing that political change is impossible. President Nicolas Maduro, meanwhile, continues to ignore international criticism regarding the disputed July election.

Gonzalez, who claims to have won the election, fled Venezuela over the weekend after facing arrest threats. His departure has led to a surge in emigration as many Venezuelans, already burdened by the country’s economic crisis, are losing faith in any potential transition.

“I thought there could be a change, but now I don’t know, it seems like we’ll follow the footsteps of Cuba,” said teacher Ender Lopez, reflecting the growing pessimism.

The opposition, now led by Maria Corina Machado, is calling for international recognition of Gonzalez as president-elect, but their efforts are seen as unlikely to succeed. Past attempts to challenge Maduro’s legitimacy, including the establishment of a parallel government by Juan Guaido in 2019, have ultimately failed.

The United States, while expressing concern over the situation, has been cautious in its response, citing competing foreign policy priorities and the potential for increased migration to the US-Mexico border.

Meanwhile, Brazil, a country that previously held a more conciliatory stance towards Maduro, has become more critical. The Venezuelan government’s recent move to revoke Brazil’s diplomatic representation in the country further highlights the strained relationship.

The flight of Gonzalez, coupled with the international community’s limited actions, has seemingly strengthened Maduro’s grip on power. While the opposition continues to call for change, their hopes appear to be fading, with many Venezuelans choosing to leave the country in search of a better life.
