Mon Sep 09 14:22:46 UTC 2024: ## India’s Sowing Area Reaches Record High, Boosting Hopes for Bumper Kharif Harvest

**New Delhi:** India’s agricultural sector is experiencing a surge in optimism as the total sowing area for the kharif season has reached a record high. According to data released by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare on Monday, 109.23 million hectares have been sown as of September 6th, surpassing last year’s figure by 2.16%. This represents 99.86% of the normal sowing area for the period, indicating a strong start to the kharif season.

The positive trend is evident across various crops. Paddy sowing has exceeded the normal area by 2%, reaching 40.95 million hectares, a 4.06% increase compared to last year. Sowing of coarse cereals, also known as ‘Shree Anna’, has surpassed the normal area by 4.37%, reaching 18.87 million hectares, representing a 3.85% rise compared to the previous year. Pulses sowing has also seen a significant increase, reaching 12.62 million hectares, a 7.58% growth compared to last year.

These positive figures are particularly encouraging considering the persistent food inflation witnessed in recent months. The bumper sowing bodes well for a strong kharif harvest, which constitutes 60% of India’s total foodgrain output, potentially leading to a decrease in food prices.

However, not all crops have shown positive trends. The sowing area of jute and mesta has declined, while cotton cultivation has also seen a decrease.

Despite the potential for excessive rainfall in September, experts remain optimistic about a bountiful kharif harvest. Dr Anand Vishwakarma, Project Coordinator of the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Sesame and Niger, Jabalpur, believes that the “huge” production of kharif crops, including oilseeds, will likely offset any potential negative impact of heavy rainfall.

The strong sowing figures have injected a wave of confidence among policymakers, as a successful kharif season is crucial for India’s food security. The government is focusing on boosting farm productivity and ensuring a stable supply of essential commodities.
