Anna Delvey, the subject of Netflix’s “Inventing Anna,” is firing back at criticism over her casting on “Dancing With the Stars” season 33. After co-host Whoopi Goldberg questioned the decision, Delvey defended her inclusion on the show, stating she has served her time and repaid all outstanding debts.
Delvey, who was convicted of larceny for posing as a German heiress and defrauding New York elites, was released from prison in 2021. She has since been under house arrest in New York, awaiting possible deportation. Despite this, she received special clearance from ICE to participate in “Dancing With the Stars.”
Goldberg expressed concern about Delvey’s participation, pointing to families affected by ICE detention and questioning the lack of consequences for Delvey’s actions. Other “The View” panelists echoed similar sentiments.
Delvey, however, remains unfazed by the criticism, insisting that she’s focused on winning the Mirrorball trophy. She’s paired with professional dancer Ezra Sosa and will be competing against a diverse cast including Olympic athletes, reality TV stars, and actors.
The casting controversy has sparked debate about the appropriateness of allowing a convicted criminal to participate in a popular entertainment show. While some view it as a redemption story, others feel it trivializes Delvey’s crimes and sends the wrong message.
The season premiere of “Dancing With the Stars” airs on September 17th. It remains to be seen how the audience will react to Delvey’s participation and whether she can overcome the negative sentiment surrounding her casting.
