**New Delhi, September 10, 2024:** The Indian government has announced a groundbreaking move towards modernizing toll collection on highways and expressways. The new system, utilizing a satellite-based and barrier-free approach, will be implemented through a combination of technologies, including GNSS On-Board Units, Automatic Number Plate Recognition devices, and FASTag.

The new rules, notified on September 10th, introduce dedicated GNSS lanes at toll plazas, allowing vehicles equipped with GNSS-based ETC to pass through freely. These lanes will gradually replace all traditional toll booths as GNSS technology becomes more widespread.
