Sat Sep 07 11:51:32 UTC 2024: ## Donegal Woman Turns 108, One of Ireland’s Oldest Residents
Castlefin, Donegal – Ruby Druce, a resident of Castlefin, celebrated her 108th birthday on New Year’s Eve, making her one of the oldest women in Ireland.
Born in 1915, Ruby has witnessed two World Wars and two global pandemics, including the Spanish Flu which tragically claimed the lives of her siblings in 1918. Despite her age, Ruby remains remarkably healthy and active, attributing her longevity to a life filled with hard work, daily walks, and a cod liver oil capsule.
Ruby, who lived independently until she was 98, is currently residing with her niece, Carmel Harran, after a series of unfortunate events. She spent ten years living with another niece, Margo Butler, in Letterkenny, but sadly, Margo passed away earlier this year following a cancer diagnosis.
Ruby has become a local celebrity in Donegal, known for her positive attitude and charming personality. She was even asked to switch on the town’s Christmas lights by local schoolchildren in 2022.
Ruby is a devoted fan of Daniel O’Donnell, who visited her earlier this year and performed a song with her. On her 100th birthday, she received well wishes from the President and a cheque, which she generously donated to various charities in Donegal.
Ruby’s story is a testament to the strength and resilience of the human spirit. Her remarkable life serves as an inspiration to us all, reminding us to appreciate each day and cherish the time we have with loved ones.
