LDF Strengthens Grip on Varkala Municipality in Kerala Elections
Thiruvananthapuram, December 13, 2025 – The CPI(M)-led LDF has solidified its control over the Varkala municipality following local body elections, according to data released by the State Election Commission (SEC). The LDF secured 16 seats, a notable increase from its 12 seats in the 2020 elections.
The BJP-led NDA experienced a slight setback, dropping from 11 seats to 10. The Congress-led UDF also saw a decrease, falling from 7 seats to 6. Independent candidates claimed two seats.
The election, held after ward delimitation increased the number of wards from 33 to 34, was closely watched due to the BJP’s strong performance in 2020, internal conflicts within the UDF, and the presence of rebel candidates.
The LDF successfully wrested control of Karunilakode, Chaluvila, Kallamkonam and Sivagiri wards from the BJP and Kallazhi, Cherumkunnam, and Maithanam wards from the Congress. The UDF gained Kanwasramam ward from the BJP, and Raghunathapuram and Panayil from the LDF. The BJP won Teachers Colony, Municipal Office from LDF and Jawahar Park from the UDF.
The LDF’s gains mark a significant shift in the political landscape of Varkala, further cementing their dominance in the region.
