Fri Dec 12 18:30:00 UTC 2025: Legendary Ukrainian Singer Stepan Giha Dies at 66
Kyiv, Ukraine – Stepan Giha, a beloved figure in Ukrainian music and a People’s Artist of Ukraine, passed away today, December 12, at the age of 66. His death follows weeks of health complications and a recent surgery.
Giha, known for his iconic hits like “Yavorina” and “Son,” had been hospitalized in November after suffering a serious health issue. He underwent a complex operation and his team announced the cancellation of upcoming concerts, citing the need for recovery and rehabilitation.
On December 8, journalist Vitaliy Glagola reported that Giha had undergone a leg amputation following complications from a second knee surgery. The amputation was reportedly a necessary measure due to critical circulatory issues in his lower extremity caused by a spike in blood sugar levels, a result of the stress on his body. The singer was reportedly in a coma in critical condition at the time.
News outlets today confirmed that Giha’s heart had stopped. The head of the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional State Administration, Svitlana Onyschuk, confirmed Giha’s death on Facebook, calling him “an artist whose voice, songs, and sincerity became part of the Ukrainian cultural heritage.”
Born on November 16, 1959, in the Zakarpattia region, Giha’s musical journey began in childhood. After studying at the Uzhhorod Music School and the Kyiv Conservatory, he embarked on a successful career as a singer, composer, and producer. His 2002 album, “Vulytsya Natali,” earned him the title of “Golden Disc” for selling over a million copies.
Giha is survived by his two children, Kvitoslava and Stepan, as well as his grandson, Daniel. He will be remembered for his contributions to Ukrainian music and his enduring legacy as a national treasure.
