Krishi Mela Emphasizes Sustainable Farming for Rain-Fed Regions
Mysuru, India – December 7, 2025 – The three-day Krishi Mela, hosted by the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Mandya, concluded today, reinforcing the critical need for sustainable and integrated farming practices in the predominantly rain-fed regions of Mandya, Hassan, Mysuru, Chamarajanagar, and Kodagu.
The event underscored the importance of reducing reliance on chemical inputs, reviving organic farming methods, and promoting value-addition to agricultural produce. Speakers highlighted the decreasing area under cultivation and the over-reliance on chemical fertilizers, urging a shift towards improved soil and water management.
Nishchalanathananda Swami stressed the need for agricultural universities to prioritize practices that enhance soil health and farmer incomes, expressing concern over the growing disconnect between farmers, cattle, and the land. He proposed that UAS, Mandya, serve as a “field laboratory” for research-driven yield improvements, given the region’s dependence on rain-fed agriculture.
The Mela featured discussions on integrated farming, agro-forestry, crop value-addition, marketing, export opportunities, and agricultural entrepreneurship. Awards were presented to progressive farmers from the five districts under UAS Mandya’s jurisdiction, recognizing their contributions to sustainable agriculture. Government officials and religious leaders were also in attendance.
