Doha, Qatar – Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has accused Israel of using “security concerns” as a pretext to justify escalating military actions across the region. In an interview at the Doha Forum, al-Sharaa alleged that Israel is diverting attention from its actions in Gaza by stoking regional tensions and engaging in frequent airstrikes and ground operations within Syria.

Al-Sharaa claimed his administration has attempted to de-escalate tensions with Israel, emphasizing Syria’s commitment to regional peace and stability. However, he stated that these efforts have been met with increased Israeli violence and violations of Syrian airspace. He demanded Israel withdraw to pre-2024 borders, prior to the fall of the Assad regime, and uphold the 1974 Disengagement Accord.

Addressing concerns about women’s rights, al-Sharaa asserted that women are “empowered” under his rule and that their rights are protected.

He committed to holding parliamentary elections within the next five years, stressing the importance of strengthening institutions and adhering to democratic principles. He also said, “Rulers have to gain the satisfaction of the majority of people in order to rule properly”.
