Giants Rookie RB Cam Skattebo Out for Season with Gruesome Ankle Injury

East Rutherford, NJ – New York Giants rookie running back Cam Skattebo will miss the remainder of the 2025 NFL season after suffering a severe ankle injury in the team’s Week 8 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. The injury occurred as Skattebo attempted to catch a pass from fellow rookie Jaxson Dart and was tackled from behind by Eagles linebacker Zack Baun. The impact resulted in an open ankle dislocation, fractured fibula, and ruptured deltoid ligament, requiring emergency surgery.

While the injury appeared devastating, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Skattebo is expected to make a full recovery. The current timeline has the rookie sidelined for 4-6 months after his ankle injury and surgery. That will allow the 23-year-old to return for the team’s offseason program and put him on track to be ready for Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season.

“It’s a gruesome injury but the recovery is actually not as bad. We’ve seen several others with similar injuries come back and play the next year. Dak Prescott comes to mind. So, 2026 for Cam Skattebo,” Rapoport stated.

While the team has not released an official timeline, then-coach Brian Daboll confirmed that Skattebo’s surgery was successful and that the running back is on the road to recovery.

Despite being sidelined, Skattebo has remained active, attending a WWE event and his alma mater’s rivalry game, Arizona State. He also addressed criticism about his activities on social media, stating, “Aye, honestly if you don’t like that I’m having a good time while dealing with a tough time, then just go ahead and unfollow and casually move on. I’m not able to play football and have the fun I’ve been having my whole life so I am doing things outside the box trying to find stuff to keep me happy.”

With Skattebo out, Matt Tracy has stepped into the role of the Giants’ lead running back, with Eric Singletary serving as a secondary option. Skattebo currently leads the Giants in rushing with 410 yards and five touchdowns on 101 carries. Tracy needs just 13 yards to surpass him.

The Giants will face the New England Patriots in Week 13.
