Shastri Issues Stern Warning to ‘Troublemakers’ Targeting Kohli and Sharma

New Delhi: Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has launched a scathing attack on individuals attempting to undermine the careers of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. In a recent interview, Shastri issued a firm warning to “troublemakers,” amidst ongoing debate about the veteran duo’s future in the Indian team, particularly concerning the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Shastri, who enjoys a close relationship with both players, emphasized their stature as “ODI giants,” cautioning against meddling with their careers and reputations. “You don’t mess around with players of that stature,” Shastri stated, seemingly dismissing concerns about their positions and roles in the team.

While Shastri refrained from naming specific individuals, his comments were widely interpreted as a message to the current selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, and the team management. He urged them to support the proven match-winners instead of making their positions difficult.

Shastri’s remarks come amidst increased scrutiny regarding Kohli and Sharma’s longevity and approach, particularly after their retirements from Tests and ODIs. Critics have suggested that a lack of match practice could hinder their selection for the 2027 ODI World Cup, urging them to participate in domestic one-day cricket.

While Rohit has agreed to play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy to meet BCCI criteria, Kohli initially declined before changing his mind after persuasion from selectors.

In response to being pressed on the identity of those causing trouble, Shastri cryptically stated, “Some people are doing it… And if these two switch on properly, hit the right buttons, all the ones messing around will disappear from the scene real quick.” Shastri’s staunch defense underscores the importance of backing experienced players as India prepares for future ODI tournaments.
