Northeast, Mid-Atlantic Slammed by First Major Winter Storm of the Season

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The first significant winter storm of the season roared through the Northeast and mid-Atlantic on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, blanketing the region with snow and ice, causing widespread travel disruptions and school closures.

The storm delivered up to a foot (30 centimeters) of snow in some areas of Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts and Maine. Storm warnings and weather advisories were in effect throughout the day.

Hundreds of flights were delayed and roads turned treacherous, leading to slowed commutes and numerous accidents. In West Virginia, a tractor-trailer cab dangled precariously off a bridge after the driver lost control on icy roads but was rescued unharmed.

The storm followed on the heels of severe winter weather in the Midwest after Thanksgiving. Chicago O’Hare International Airport broke its record for single-day snowfall in November.

Meteorologists warn that another weather system could bring more winter weather to the mid-Atlantic region through Friday and Saturday.

In New Hampshire, residents were invited to submit names for the state’s second annual name-a-plow competition.
