Bengaluru, India – Meesho, the e-commerce platform that quietly dominated India’s Tier-2 and Tier-3 markets, opened its Initial Public Offering (IPO) today, running until December 10th. The company, known for its zero-commission model and focus on price-sensitive consumers, has become a major player in the Indian e-commerce landscape by prioritizing affordability and a discovery-based shopping experience.
While Amazon and Flipkart concentrated on premium urban customers, Meesho thrived by connecting small sellers with a vast, untapped market in India’s heartland. This strategy allowed them to capture a significant portion of the country’s e-commerce orders, estimated to be between 29-31%.
Meesho operates as a marketplace, linking millions of small sellers with buyers nationwide. Unlike other platforms, it largely avoids charging sellers commissions, attracting a large influx of businesses offering a wide array of low-priced goods. The platform’s user experience focuses on discovery, with consumers browsing feeds and curated collections similar to Instagram, rather than searching for specific items.
The company plans to use a significant portion of the ₹5,421 crore raised through the IPO to enhance its technology, logistics, and AI capabilities. A smaller portion constitutes an offer for sale. In addition, Meesho is investing in new initiatives like low-cost logistics, grocery fulfillment, and Meesho Payments, aiming to provide comprehensive financial services to sellers.
However, Meesho faces challenges. While revenue has grown from ₹5,734 crore in FY23 to ₹9,389 crore in FY25, losses have fluctuated, with a substantial loss of ₹3,945 crore in FY25. A heavy reliance on cash-on-delivery (COD) orders, which have a lower success rate than prepaid orders, also impacts profitability. Moreover, competition from established players like Amazon and Flipkart poses a constant threat.
Despite these hurdles, Meesho’s IPO presents an opportunity for investors to back a company that has successfully tapped into a previously underserved market. Whether Meesho can translate its impressive scale into sustainable profits remains a key question for long-term investors.
