Trump Blames Lax Immigration After Shooting Near White House, Halts Afghan Immigration
Washington, D.C. – November 27, 2025 – Following Wednesday’s “heinous assault” on two National Guard members near the White House, President Donald Trump has declared lax migration policies the “single greatest national security threat” facing the nation. Blaming the incident on an Afghan national who entered the U.S. under the Biden-era Operation Allies Welcome program, Trump vowed to increase scrutiny of migrants and overhaul the immigration system.
The suspect, who arrived in September 2021 after the collapse of the Afghan government, was part of a program that resettled tens of thousands of Afghans who assisted American forces. Trump, describing Afghanistan as a “hellhole on earth,” announced his administration would review all individuals who entered the country under the program, a measure already under consideration prior to the shooting.
Trump also criticized the large Somali community in Minnesota, further highlighting his ambition to curb migration. He stated his desire to remove anyone “who does not belong here or does not add benefit to our country,” adding, “If they can’t love our country, we don’t want them.”
Following the President’s remarks, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services announced an indefinite suspension of all immigration requests for Afghan nationals, pending a security and vetting protocol review.
Critics fear the President is unfairly targeting the Afghan community. Shawn VanDiver, president of #AfghanEvac, urged against politicizing the tragedy and emphasized that the shooting should not overshadow the tens of thousands of Afghans who have legally resettled in the U.S. and those awaiting resettlement.
Vice President J.D. Vance echoed Trump’s sentiments, criticizing Biden’s administration for opening the “floodgate to unvetted Afghan refugees.” The administration is reportedly ramping up deportations and tightening refugee admissions, reallocating resources and raising concerns about other law enforcement priorities.
