Oscar Piastri Wins Qatar Grand Prix Sprint Race, Closes Gap on Leader Norris
DOHA, Qatar – Oscar Piastri secured a crucial victory in the Qatar Grand Prix sprint race, narrowing the points gap to championship leader Lando Norris. Piastri’s win puts him 22 points behind Norris, while Max Verstappen trails by 25 points with two races remaining.
Norris finished third, behind Piastri and George Russell. Verstappen struggled, finishing fourth and signaling that Red Bull has work to do ahead of Sunday’s main race. Norris can secure the championship with a win on Sunday.
The sprint race itself lacked significant excitement, though Yuki Tsunoda’s impressive start saw him briefly challenge for third. A late penalty for track limits violations dropped Tsunoda to sixth.
Formula 1 rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli inherited fifth after Tsunoda’s penalty but also received a five-second time penalty, dropping him to sixth. Fernando Alonso finished seventh, while Carlos Sainz secured the final points-paying position in eighth.
Ferrari endured a difficult race, with Charles Leclerc finishing 13th and Lewis Hamilton finishing 17th.
Looking ahead, Tsunoda’s future with the team remains uncertain, with a decision expected between the Qatar and Abu Dhabi races. Sunday’s race could be his last chance to demonstrate his value to the team.
