Harper Returns, Spurs Topple Trail Blazers, Boosting NBA Cup Hopes
PORTLAND, Ore. – San Antonio Spurs rookie Dylan Harper made a successful return from a calf injury Wednesday night, contributing to the Spurs’ 115-102 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers. The win keeps San Antonio in contention for the NBA Cup.
Harper, the No. 2 overall pick, tallied seven points, three rebounds, and two assists in just over 16 minutes of play after missing 10 games due to a strained left calf suffered on November 2nd against the Phoenix Suns.
“I thought he was great,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “We needed all 16 and a half minutes of his, and it was just good to see him back on the court.” Johnson also noted that Harper was tired at the end of his shift.
Prior to the injury, Harper was averaging an impressive 14 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 3.8 assists, showcasing his potential as a key player for the Spurs.
The game also marked the first time this season that Harper and starting point guard De’Aaron Fox were both available. The two shared limited court time as Harper ramps up to full strength. Harper expressed enthusiasm about playing alongside Fox. “Playing with someone with such high IQ… I think we both understand where each other’s going to be and everyone else. Just playing with him on the floor, I think is going to be a matchup nightmare for whoever.”
While Harper’s return is a positive sign, the Spurs are still without Victor Wembanyama (calf) and Stephon Castle (hip flexor strain). Both players are expected to be re-evaluated soon to determine a timeline for their return to the court.
