Dharmendra Remembered as ‘Family’ by Saira Banu: A Bond Forged Over Biryani and Badminton

Mumbai, November 24, 2025 – Veteran actor Dharmendra, who passed away recently, is being fondly remembered by Dilip Kumar’s wife, Saira Banu, as a beloved member of their family. Banu spoke of the deep bond between Dharmendra and her late husband, Dilip Kumar, describing their relationship as that of brothers.

The two legendary actors starred together in Paari (1966) and Anokha Milan (1972), with Kumar making cameo appearances. Dharmendra often cited Kumar’s film “Shaheed” (1948) as the inspiration behind his acting career.

Banu revealed that their connection went beyond professional collaborations. “Dilip sahab considered him like a younger brother,” she said. “We’ve been there for each other in good and bad times. He was one of those rare people who visited Dilip sahab quite often, whether he was in hospital or at home.”

She reminisced about their shared love for food, particularly a special biryani that was prepared whenever Dharmendra visited. The two stars also enjoyed playing badminton together, recalling matches even during film shoots in Madras.

Beyond leisure, Dharmendra often sought Dilip Kumar’s advice, especially regarding family matters. Banu mentioned that Dilip Kumar attended the mahurat of Sunny and Bobby Deol’s films.

Saira Banu also noted that she had spoken to Dharmendra before his hospitalization and that she was going to visit, but this meeting did not happen.

Dharmendra and Saira Banu also worked together in films, including Jwaar Bhata, Aayee Milan Ki Bela, Resham Ki Dori, International Crook, Pocket Maar, Saazish, Chaitali and Shaadi.
