Dhaka, Bangladesh – The interim government of Bangladesh is intensifying its pressure on India to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was sentenced to death in absentia earlier this week by a special International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) for crimes against humanity. The charges stem from a brutal crackdown on student-led protests in August 2024, which, according to the UN, resulted in over 1,400 deaths.

According to a statement released by the Foreign Ministry, India has an “obligatory responsibility” to hand over Hasina under a 2013 bilateral extradition treaty. Keeping Hasina is considered “a grave act of unfriendly behaviour,”.

Hasina, 78, has been in hiding in India since her ouster in 2024, following a mass uprising against her increasingly autocratic rule.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs has acknowledged the verdict but has remained silent on the possibility of extradition. This is reportedly the third extradition request filed by Bangladesh.

The case is significantly complicating relations between Dhaka and New Delhi.

Despite the diplomatic tension, there are recent signs that communication channels remain open. National Security Advisor Khalilur Rahman recently attended a security summit in India, where he met with his Indian counterpart, Ajit Doval.

Bangladesh is scheduled to hold general elections in February, the first since the deadly protests. Hasina’s party, the Awami League, is currently banned from political activity.
