Long-Absconding Pesticide Fraud Suspect Arrested After 18 Years on the Run

KALABURAGI, India – November 14, 2025 – After an 18-year manhunt, Sophan Shesharao Tonde, the prime suspect in a 2007 pesticide fraud case, has been apprehended by the Kalaburagi District Police. The arrest, announced today, brings to a close a case that has plagued local farmers and the state government for nearly two decades.

The case originated in September 2007, when an Agriculture Department official filed a complaint alleging that Tonde, along with two accomplices, Narayan and Siris, were illegally transporting and selling pesticides in Motakpalli village, Sedam taluk. The fraudulent activity resulted in significant financial losses for farmers and the state.

While Narayan and Siris eventually appeared in court, Tonde evaded authorities and failed to attend any hearings. The case was declared long pending in 2016.

Acting on directives from Superintendent of Police Addur Srinivasalu, a special police team, led by Mudhol Police Inspector Daulat N. Kuri, intensified efforts to locate and apprehend Tonde. Over the past four months, the team conducted extensive surveillance across multiple locations in Maharashtra, meticulously tracking Tonde’s movements.

Their efforts culminated in Tonde’s arrest on Thursday in Chopanwadi village, Ambajogai taluk, Beed district.

“This arrest demonstrates our unwavering commitment to justice, no matter how long it takes,” stated Mr. Srinivasalu, praising the team for their “hard work and consistent efforts” in bringing the long-absconding accused to justice. The case will now proceed in court.
