Brooklyn, NY – Remembered as one of the most talented NBA draft classes in recent history, the 2018 draft saw the rise of stars like Luka Doncic, Trae Young, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. However, one name once projected to top them all, Michael Porter Jr., is finally stepping into the spotlight after a long and winding road.
Plagued by a back injury in his sole season at Missouri, Porter Jr.’s draft stock plummeted. Selected 14th overall, he endured further setbacks, including another back surgery that sidelined him for his entire rookie year.
Now, seven years later, the 6-foot-10 forward is being thrust into a leading role for the Brooklyn Nets, acquired in a trade that included Cam Johnson. “You can see the growth,” said Nets coach Jordi Fernandez. “We need him to keep growing.”
While Porter Jr. found success as a key contributor and sharpshooter (over 40% from three-point range) alongside Nikola Jokic on the Denver Nuggets’ 2023 championship team, his role in Brooklyn demands more. With the Nets boasting the league’s youngest roster, Porter is tasked with leading the team and shouldering a significant offensive burden, especially with Cam Thomas sidelined with a hamstring injury.
This season, Porter is averaging career-highs in points (22.4), rebounds (8.4), and assists (3.0). However, the increased workload has also revealed some growing pains, with his field goal and three-point percentages dipping to career lows, alongside an increase in turnovers.
“It’s challenging,” Fernandez acknowledged. “The intensity he’s playing with is different… He touches the ball more. His turnovers are up, so he’s gotta clean that up a little bit.”
Despite the challenges, Porter is embracing the opportunity. “I’m going to push myself to be able to handle a bigger load than I used to,” he said. “As the season goes on, I’ll get even more comfortable figuring out how I can get good looks off against some of these really good defenders. It’s going to be a work in progress.”
As the Nets navigate the season, Michael Porter Jr.’s development into a bonafide star will be crucial to their success, finally fulfilling the potential that had NBA scouts buzzing back in 2018.
