New Delhi Residents Protest Worsening Air Quality, Demand Government Action
NEW DELHI, November 9, 2025 – Scores of concerned citizens, including parents and environmental activists, took to the streets near India Gate today to protest the dangerously deteriorating air quality plaguing the nation’s capital.
Demonstrators, many accompanied by their children, voiced their frustration with the government’s perceived inaction and demanded immediate measures to ensure access to clean air. Environmentalist Bhavreen Khandari stated, “So many parents are here because their children are suffering. Every third child already has damaged lungs; they will live nearly 10 years less than those growing up in cleaner air.”
Protester Abhishek lamented the city’s decline from being a “green capital” under former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit to ranking among the most polluted cities globally. “Politicians keep blaming each other instead of taking responsibility,” he criticized.
Police intervened, detaining several protesters for assembling without permission, citing concerns for law and order and security arrangements. DCP (New Delhi) Devesh Kumar Mahla clarified that the detentions were “preventive in nature,” emphasizing that Jantar Mantar is the designated site for protests with proper authorization.
The protest highlights the growing public concern over air pollution in Delhi and the urgent need for effective and sustainable solutions.
