Tamil Nadu Jallikattu Welfare Association Protests Alleged Corruption Among Commentators

MADURAI, INDIA – November 3, 2025 – Members of the Tamil Nadu Jallikattu Welfare Association staged a protest outside the District Collector Office in Madurai on Monday, alleging corrupt practices among jallikattu commentators. The association claims that certain commentators, brought in from districts including Pudukkottai and Tiruchi, are accepting money from bull owners in exchange for preferential treatment and repeated praise during the world-famous Jallikattu events held annually during the Pongal festival in Alanganallur, Palamedu, and Avaniapuram.

Protesters stated that commentators receiving payments are reportedly engaging in excessive praise of specific bulls, even announcing winners prematurely. This practice allegedly disadvantages bull owners who do not offer bribes, leading to their bulls’ names being omitted, even during successful runs.

The association demands that the district administration intervene by selecting commentators based on merit and integrity. They also propose rotating commentators after each round to ensure fairness and prevent any single commentator from influencing the event’s outcome unduly. The association hopes to restore fairness and integrity to the commentary of the beloved Jallikattu tradition.
