Fri Oct 31 07:18:37 UTC 2025: ## News Article: Landslip Devastates Papua New Guinea, Leaving At Least 21 Dead
Melbourne, Australia – October 31, 2025 (12:48 PM IST) – A devastating landslip in the early hours of Friday morning has claimed the lives of at least 21 people in the remote highlands of Papua New Guinea. The disaster struck around 2:00 AM local time in the village of Kukas, Enga province, burying homes as residents slept.
Australian Broadcasting Corp. (ABC) quoted local police confirming the death toll. Enga Governor Peter Ipatas told ABC that locals reported a higher number of fatalities, with estimates reaching 30, and 18 bodies already recovered. Attempts by The Associated Press to reach both Governor Ipatas and the Wabag police station for further confirmation were unsuccessful.
Mate Bagossy, the UN humanitarian advisor for Papua New Guinea, has yet to comment on the situation.
This tragedy comes just over a year after another devastating landslip in Enga province in May 2024. The United Nations conservatively estimated that disaster resulted in the deaths of 670 villagers, while the Papua New Guinean government reported that over 2,000 people were buried.
The event highlights the continued vulnerability of communities in Papua New Guinea to natural disasters.
