Toronto, Canada – Sydney Sweeney is generating significant Oscar buzz for her portrayal of trailblazing boxer Christy Martin in the upcoming film, “Christy,” set to release November 7th. The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, garnered a rare standing ovation, propelling Sweeney into the awards season conversation.
Director David Michôd initially had reservations about casting Sweeney, citing preconceived notions about her “21st-century internet” persona. However, after viewing her performance in “Reality,” and learning about her past MMA training, Michôd recognized Sweeney’s talent and physical capabilities were a perfect fit.
Sweeney underwent a dramatic physical transformation for the role, gaining 30 pounds of muscle and enduring rigorous training. The film explores the brutal physical abuse Martin suffered at the hands of her husband and trainer, James Martin, played by Ben Foster.
The actress sees parallels between Martin’s fight in the ring and her own experiences navigating Hollywood. “For Christy, the ring was her escape…It’s where she feels the most free,” Sweeney said, adding that she feels like a “caged animal in a sense” in Hollywood, with acting being her “ring.”
Sweeney, who also produced “Christy” through her Fifty-Fifty banner, is also starring in and producing “The Housemaid,” a psychological thriller due out December 19th. While Sweeney’s career continues to flourish, she remains grounded and focused on her craft. She credits her “Euphoria” co-stars for their support, particularly after the tragic passing of Angus Cloud.
Looking ahead, Sweeney expressed interest in reuniting with Glen Powell for an “Anyone But You” sequel if the “right concept and script” come along. While she dismissed rumors of leaning into the romantic speculation between the two actors for publicity, she acknowledged the press played a significant role in creating the narrative.
Sweeney also addressed the constant scrutiny surrounding her image, pushing back against criticism and cosmetic surgery rumors. “I’ve never gotten anything done,” she asserted. “I’m going to age gracefully.”
Sweeney has chosen the National Center on Domestic and Sexual Violence as her charity, underscoring the film’s themes and her personal connection to the issue. Ben Foster praised Sweeney’s professionalism and commitment, emphasizing her sensitivity and dedication to portraying Christy Martin’s resilience.
