Wed Oct 29 02:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Doctor Who Returns for Christmas 2026, BBC Confirms!
London, UK – Good news, Whovians! The BBC has confirmed that Doctor Who will return for a Christmas special in 2026, penned by returning showrunner Russell T Davies. The announcement, made on Tuesday, will reassure fans after a period of uncertainty surrounding the show’s future.
While the BBC confirmed its continued commitment to the iconic sci-fi series, there was also a surprise announcement: the BBC will not be partnering with Disney+ for the next season of the show. Disney+ has been the international home for Doctor Who outside of the UK for the past two series. Lindsay Salt, director of drama at the BBC, thanked Disney+ for their partnership on previous series.
“The BBC remains fully committed to Doctor Who, which continues to be one of our most loved dramas,” said Salt, allaying any fears of the show being shelved. “We are delighted that Russell T Davies has agreed to write us another spectacular Christmas special for 2026. We can assure fans, the Doctor is not going anywhere, and we will be announcing plans for the next series in due course, which will ensure the Tardis remains at the heart of the BBC.”
The future of who will play the Doctor is uncertain, especially after the last season finale saw Ncuti Gatwa regenerate into Billie Piper. Piper, who previously played the Doctor’s companion Rose Tyler, has given ambiguous statements about her return to the show. It remains unclear whether Piper will assume the mantle of the 16th Doctor.
In other Doctor Who news, spin-off show “The War Between The Land And The Sea,” starring Russell Tovey, will air on BBC One later this year. An animated Doctor Who series is also in development for CBeebies.
The BBC also announced upcoming releases of a newly republish novel, “Rebecca’s World – Journey to the Forbidden Planet”, a release of the Terror of the Zygons on Blu-ray, and upcoming events related to Doctor Who.
