Tue Oct 28 00:30:00 UTC 2025: San Francisco 49ers Suffer Crushing Defeat Against Texans Amidst Injury Crisis
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — A season plagued by injuries finally caught up with the San Francisco 49ers as they suffered a disheartening 26-15 loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday. The Niners, missing key players on both sides of the ball, struggled to compete against a Texans team that dominated on both sides of the ball.
“There’s not much to sugarcoat there,” coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game, lamenting his team’s performance. “I was really disappointed with how we looked for all four quarters. First half was unacceptable. Second half didn’t get much better.”
The 49ers fell into an early 16-0 hole and failed to secure a first down until the final minute of the first half. The Texans offense, previously struggling, exploded for 475 yards and converted an impressive 9 of 16 third-down attempts.
Hope remains for the 49ers as Coach Shanahan mentioned the possibility of quarterback Brock Purdy returning this week from a toe injury, and receivers Ricky Pearsall and Brandon Aiyuk are also working their way back to the field.
Tight end George Kittle emphasized the importance of these returns, stating, “I can’t wait to start playing with those guys again. Currently, we’re playing with what we’ve got. What we’ve got is enough to win football games.”
While the offense struggled overall, backup quarterback Mac Jones did manage to connect with tight ends for touchdowns, finding both Kittle and Jake Tonges in the end zone.
Despite the struggles, the 49ers did manage to end a NFL-record 14-game drought without an interception, courtesy of Deommodore Lenoir. However, a miscalculation after the interception cost the team a chance at points before halftime.
The loss further highlighted the impact of losing key defensive players, especially after Nick Bosa suffered a season-ending knee injury.
Adding to the team’s woes, several players sustained injuries during the game, including Jones, DE Sam Okuayinonu, DT Jordan Elliott, LB Dee Winters, and DT Alfred Collins, all listed as day-to-day. DE Bryce Huff and C Jake Brendel are expected to miss another game.
The 49ers’ struggles were evident in their time of possession, holding the ball for less than 19 minutes, their second-lowest total in a game since at least 2000.
The 49ers will look to regroup as they travel to face the New York Giants next Sunday.
