Tue Oct 28 10:00:00 UTC 2025: “Dancing With the Stars” Drama: Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd Slam Jan Ravnik’s Casting as Pro Dancer

Los Angeles, CA – Former “Dancing With the Stars” (DWTS) professional dancers Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd have ignited controversy with their outspoken criticism of Jan Ravnik, a recent addition to the show’s pro dancer roster. Ravnik, known for his work as a backup dancer on Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, joined DWTS as a professional partner this season, a move that Chmerkovskiy and Murgatroyd vehemently disagree with.

In a recent episode of Murgatroyd’s podcast, “The Penthouse With Peta,” Chmerkovskiy did not mince words, stating, “Jan has absolutely no business being a pro on Dancing With the Stars.” He questioned Ravnik’s foundation, technique, and understanding of ballroom partnership, arguing that the Eras Tour dancer lacks the necessary expertise to effectively teach ballroom styles. Murgatroyd echoed these concerns, suggesting that Ravnik’s celebrity partner, Jen Affleck, of “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” is at a disadvantage due to his limited ballroom background. “Hiring a non-ballroom dancer to teach ballroom dancing to a celebrity as a job is outrageous,” Murgatroyd said.

The criticism comes shortly after Ravnik and Affleck advanced to the next round of the competition, receiving favorable scores for their “Wicked”-themed performance.

Ravnik expressed excitement about joining DWTS back in August, stating, “I traveled all around the world with Eras Tour, and now I’m coming to the ballroom stage for Dancing With the Stars.” He had stated his eagerness to compete for the mirrorball trophy.

Billboard has reached out to DWTS producers for comment on Chmerkovskiy and Murgatroyd’s remarks. The podcast episode is available for viewing. The 34th season of “Dancing With the Stars” is currently underway, featuring a new cast of celebrity contestants including Alix Earle, Robert Irwin, and Lauren Jauregui.
