Avelo Airlines to Exit Bradley Airport, Sparks Controversy
By Juliana Lepore and Preston Stober
WINDSOR LOCKS, Conn. (WTNH) — Avelo Airlines will cease operations at Bradley International Airport (BDL) on January 25, 2026, the Connecticut Airport Authority (CAA) announced Thursday. The departure includes the cancellation of the state’s sole nonstop route to Montego Bay, Jamaica, a move the CAA labeled “inexplicable.”
Bradley Airport currently hosts three direct Avelo flights to Punta Cana, Cancun, and Montego Bay.
The CAA released a strongly worded statement criticizing Avelo’s decision, stating that it was “puzzled” by Avelo’s claimed lack of success at BDL, particularly given the successes of other airlines operating at the airport. They also accused Avelo of “misrepresenting facts” and attempting to avoid standard airport fees.
“The cancellation of these services and Avelo’s stated reasoning for doing so also continues a disturbing trend of the airline misrepresenting facts and trying to dodge reasonable fees that other airlines pay as a regular course of business,” the CAA’s statement said.
Avelo responded with its own statement, citing financial concerns as the primary reason for the exit. “It is always disappointing to remove flights; however, multiple business factors make this the best decision for the airline’s continued growth,” the statement read. “Like all business decisions we make, this exit was made based on facts – the revenues on the market did not cover the costs.”
The airline also addressed accusations related to its alleged involvement in deportation flights and protests throughout Connecticut, stating, “Any other insinuation to the contrary is unfortunate, false and uninformed. We remain committed to serving the state of Connecticut through our low fares out of New Haven Tweed airport.”
Passengers expressed disappointment, particularly those relying on the nonstop Montego Bay flight to visit family in the Caribbean. “We don’t get to see each other as much as we would like to,” Armando Ruiz told News 8, referring to his family in the Dominican Republic.
All customers with bookings after January 25, 2026, will receive full refunds, according to Avelo.
