Pinarayi Vijayan to Release Directory of Punnapra-Vayalar Uprising Fighters
ALAPPUZHAA, October 26, 2025 – A comprehensive directory documenting the participants of the historic Punnapra-Vayalar uprising is set to be released by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan tomorrow, October 27, 2025, during the valedictory function of the uprising’s 79th anniversary in Vayalar.
The directory, a result of years of meticulous research led by CPI(M) leader and former Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac, features details of 1,859 individuals who took part in the pivotal struggle. “This is not just another political history,” explained Mr. Isaac, “We have verified the names against documentary evidence and cross-referenced with leaders from both the CPI(M) and the Communist Party of India.”
The directory identifies key leaders such as K.V. Pathrose and Varghese Vaidyan and acknowledges the estimated 400 to 500 martyrs of the uprising, though details could only be confirmed for 193 of them due to the challenges of tracing records eight decades later. Many families of participants had also relocated following land distribution by the Communist government in 1957.
The directory is divided into two sections, covering participants from the Aroor to Aryad grama panchayats and the Alappuzha municipality, Punnapra regions, and areas adjoining Ambalappuzha.
The data collection was conducted as part of the Alappuzha Heritage Tourism Project. The directory will be available on the Muziris Heritage Project website and will be distributed free of charge to selected libraries and local political committees during the release event. Libraries are required to provide proof of identity to receive the directory.
The directory serves as a significant historical document preserving the memory of the Punnapra-Vayalar uprising and its participants.
