**Olympia, Washington – October 7, 2025** – The Washington State Capitol building in Olympia was the target of vandalism on the evening of October 6, 2025, when an intruder gained entry and caused significant damage. According to a statement from the Washington State Patrol, the suspect, who has a history of mental health challenges, has been taken into custody.

The incident began around 10:15 p.m. when the suspect parked in a flower bed in front of the Legislative Building. Alerted by the Department of Enterprise Services, State Troopers responded to find the suspect had already broken in through a ground-floor window using two hammers.

Once inside, the individual proceeded to damage various items throughout the building. “The suspect’s actions were very purposeful at the Capitol, but appears to be an individual experiencing a mental health crisis of some sort,” said State Patrol spokesman Chris Loftis.

Damage included a smashed glass door leading to the State Reception Room, where the intruder allegedly set fire to several items, including the original, historically significant rug. Flags on the Rotunda were also knocked over and one was burned. Busts of George Washington and Martin Luther King Jr. were also toppled.

Lieutenant Governor Denny Heck’s office confirmed the extent of the damage. Diandra Asana, spokesperson for Mr. Heck, stated that the State Patrol does not believe the incident was politically motivated.

The suspect has been booked into Thurston County Jail on suspicion of first-degree burglary, first-degree arson, and first-degree malicious mischief.

An investigation is underway to assess the full extent of the damage and determine next steps for restoration.
