Fri Sep 26 01:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Durga Puja Weather Alert: Heavy Rainfall and Thunderstorms Expected, New Low-Pressure System Forming
**Kolkata, India –** Kolkata residents are bracing for more rain as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in the coming days, coinciding with the Durga Puja festivities. Just days after record-breaking rainfall flooded the city, with some areas still waterlogged, a new low-pressure system is developing in the Bay of Bengal, threatening to disrupt celebrations.
According to meteorologist Ayan Ghoshal, Kolkata experienced a severe thunderstorm on Tuesday night, prompting a “Orange” alert warning for the city. The latest IMD bulletin indicates that heavy rainfall is expected to lash Kolkata within the next 2-3 hours, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph. Similar conditions are predicted for parts of South 24 Parganas district.
The cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a low-pressure area and further deepen into a deep depression off the coasts of South Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. It is predicted to make landfall around September 27th. Consequently, fishermen have been advised against venturing into the sea until Sunday.
The forecast for the remainder of September includes light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms across South Bengal, along with gusty winds of 30-40 kmph and the possibility of lightning strikes. Heavy rainfall is particularly expected in South 24 Parganas and Jhargram districts on Saturday. Kolkata is likely to experience cloudy skies and moderate rainfall.
The formation of yet another low-pressure system around Ashtami (a significant day during Durga Puja) is a cause for concern, although its trajectory remains uncertain. There is a possibility of increased rainfall on Navami and Dashami, potentially impacting the festivities.
Residents are advised to stay updated on the weather forecast and take necessary precautions to avoid disruptions and ensure safety during the Puja celebrations.
