Oregon high school football kicked off the 2023 season with a bang, delivering a weekend of thrilling matchups, surprising upsets, and standout individual performances across the state.
In Grants Pass, Matt Kennedy secured his first win as head coach as Grants Pass held off North Medford 21-18. Jordan Rossetta shone at QB with 230 passing yards and a touchdown, while Treyton Powers added 82 rushing yards and a score. No. 7 Willamette cruised past South Medford 34-7, Hunter Vaughn starred with two touchdowns, including a 65-yard punt return.
North Salem’s Jakai Phillips put on a show, scoring six touchdowns (five rushing, one kickoff return) in a 49-32 victory over rival South Salem. Franklin triumphed over David Douglas in double overtime after a late regulation touchdown forced the extra periods. Meanwhile, No. 1 Lake Oswego dominated No. 8 Sheldon 51-7, with LaMarcus Bell returning and scoring three rushing touchdowns.
Sunset mounted an impressive comeback, defeating Tigard 49-45 after spotting them a 20-point lead. Marcus Hahm led the charge with 312 passing yards, one touchdown, and five rushing touchdowns. Our thoughts go out to Tigard head coach Todd Crist who was hospitalized but later released.
In a notable upset, 5A Forest Grove blanked 6A Century 35-0. No. 3 Central Catholic traveled to California and defeated Central Catholic (CA) 36-22, while No. 4 Tualatin edged out No. 6 Jesuit 13-7 in a defensive battle.
Newberg showcased dominance in a 50-12 win over Canby, featuring touchdowns in all facets of the game, while Clackamas outgunned Ida B. Wells 58-36 in a high-scoring affair. Oregon City’s passing attack proved unstoppable in a 34-7 victory over Grant, with Kaeden Emerson throwing for 456 yards and five touchdowns.
5A No. 1 Wilsonville survived a test from 6A Sandy, winning 34-27. Crater defeated Southridge 29-8 behind three touchdown passes from Trey Smith. Parkrose celebrated its first season-opening win since 2014, defeating Cleveland 32-12.
No. 2 Silverton, No. 3 Mountain View, and No. 3 Summit each secured decisive victories. No. 8 Dallas defeated No. 7 Churchill 30-6. No. 6 West Albany edged out Bend 22-14 thanks to a pick-six from Tyson Walker.
Further south, Mazama won the Canal Bowl over Klamath Union 34-19. No. 5 Tillamook triumphed over No. 3 Marist Catholic 35-21, while No. 4 Scappoose shut out Baker 48-0.
In smaller school action, Taft secured a dramatic 39-33 victory over Kennedy with a last-second touchdown pass, and No. 2 Heppner defeated No. 1 St. Paul 30-26 in a potential state championship preview. Joseph dominated with Kooper Grover’s standout performance, rushing for 326 yards and three touchdowns. Elkton pulled off an upset win over Alsea 57-13.
