**Indian Students Flock to Australia for Higher Education, Fueled by NEP 2020 and Austrade Initiatives**

COIMBATORE, INDIA – June 20, 2025 – A fair organized by the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) in Coimbatore showcased the growing interest among Indian students in pursuing higher education in Australia. The event, featuring 19 Australian universities, highlighted the benefits of dual-degree programs and world-class educational opportunities offered Down Under.

Vik Singh, Trade and Investment Commissioner, Austrade, addressed the media, emphasizing that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has uniquely positioned Indian students to take advantage of the dual-degree programs. These programs allow students to split their time equally between Indian and Australian institutions. He also noted the rising number of Indian students in Australia, currently standing at 130,000, and the simplified documentation process facilitated through the website http://www.studyaustralia.gov.au.

Australian universities offer scholarships and a pathway to post-study work, with students allowed to work 20 hours a week during their studies. Thanks to the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement, Indian students can work for an additional year after graduation, with a potential for 2-6 year extensions depending on the course of study.

While traditionally popular subjects like technology, finance, business, and architecture remain in demand, a growing number of students are now choosing Psychology and Biotechnology. The fair in Coimbatore alone received 400 applications for the next intake.

In addition to education, the Austrade fair also served as a platform for discussions with trade and industry representatives. Prospective investors from Coimbatore expressed interest in exploring opportunities in Artificial Intelligence, Textiles and Manufacturing, and green energy sectors in Australia.

The event was part of the third phase of the ‘Festival of Australia,’ a multi-city showcase highlighting Australian education, food, and beverage products, aiming to strengthen the relationship between Australia and India.

“Australia and India’s educational ties have deepened over the years, fostering strong economic and cultural connections that continue to grow,” said Vik Singh. “The ‘Festival of Australia’ strengthens Australia’s presence in India and celebrates a shared commitment to cross-cultural appreciation and collaboration.”
