**Ahmedabad, India – June 13, 2025** – A London-bound Air India flight crashed in a residential area of Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff on Thursday, June 12, 2025, killing 241 of the 242 people on board. Among the deceased was Nirali Patel, a 32-year-old Indian-origin dentist and Canadian citizen from Etobicoke, Toronto. According to CTV News Toronto, Ms. Patel was returning to Canada after a social visit to India. Her husband is reportedly planning to travel to India with their one-year-old child.

The flight carried 169 Indian, 53 British, seven Portuguese nationals, and 12 crew members, in addition to Ms. Patel. Only one person survived the crash.

“It’s absolutely shocking. There are no words in this grievance,” said community leader Don Patel, who knew the family. He added that Ms. Patel’s parents, brother, and sister-in-law reside in Brampton.

Canadian officials have expressed their condolences. Ontario Premier Doug Ford stated, “I’m saddened to learn that a Canadian from Mississauga, Ontario was among those lost in the tragic Air India crash near Ahmedabad. On behalf of the people of Ontario, I extend my deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of every victim.”

Prime Minister Mark Carney also expressed his devastation at the news and confirmed that Canadian transportation officials are in close contact with their counterparts. Foreign Minister Anita Anand echoed these sentiments, calling the news “devastating” and stating that Canada is in close contact with international partners.

Investigations into the cause of the crash are underway.
