Tue May 20 05:10:00 UTC 2025: **Dodgers Release Longtime Utility Player Chris Taylor, Ushering in New Era**

**LOS ANGELES** – The Los Angeles Dodgers have released veteran utility player Chris Taylor, marking the end of an era for the versatile fan favorite. The move, announced Sunday, clears a roster spot for newly activated utility player Tommy Edman, who was returning from the injured list.

Taylor, a Dodger since 2016, had seen his playing time dwindle significantly this season. He appeared in just 35 games, accumulating 28 plate appearances with a .250 batting average and 13 strikeouts.

“This was a difficult decision, but ultimately we felt it was necessary to make room for Tommy and other players who will contribute more consistently this season,” said Dodgers Manager Dave Roberts in a press conference following Sunday’s game.

By releasing Taylor, the Dodgers will be responsible for paying the final year of his four-year, $60 million contract. The move also marks a significant shift in the Dodgers’ roster construction, as it comes just days after the team parted ways with longtime backup catcher Austin Barnes to make room for top prospect Dalton Rushing. Taylor and Barnes were the team’s two longest-tenured members, with the exception of Clayton Kershaw.

The decision also signals confidence in rookie second baseman Hyeseong Kim, who has impressed since being called up from Triple-A.

Taylor was acquired by the Dodgers in June 2016 after struggling to break through with the Seattle Mariners. He transformed his career in Los Angeles, becoming a key contributor on multiple playoff teams. From 2017 to 2023, he was a versatile asset, playing all six positions with frequent playing time at six different positions: left field, center field, right field, third base, second base and shortstop.

His clutch performances in October were legendary, including a co-MVP award in the 2017 NLCS and a memorable walk-off home run in the 2021 Wild Card game. However, after struggling in the 2024 season, he struggled to find a role in the current team with a star-studded roster.

Taylor now becomes a free agent, leaving behind a legacy of versatility and clutch play in Los Angeles.
