Mon May 12 22:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Australian Grapplers Battle for CJI Quintet Spots in Intense Trials

**Melbourne, Australia** – The road to the CJI Quintet event is underway in Australia, with a unique set of trials overseen by renowned coach Lachlan Giles. The trials, livestreamed on the B-Team’s YouTube channel, are determining the Australian/Asia regional team for the -99kg and +99kg divisions. The event, which began Friday at 10 pm EST (Saturday noon Melbourne time), features a three-stage competition with a $5,000 bonus sponsored by SubMeta for the grappler securing the most submissions.

Three team spots are already filled: one wildcard from outside the region for the -66kg division, and two spots reserved for CJI 1 veterans with world-class achievements. The remaining spots are fiercely contested through a grueling round-robin format.

The trials feature a dramatic, submission-focused competition. Matches see intense grappling exchanges with several near-submissions and close decisions. The final team composition hinges on intricate point calculations, influenced by submission victories and judges’ scores across multiple matches. The competition witnessed thrilling upsets, such as Matthew Oxenham’s victory over the much larger Alex Hungahunga.

Notable competitors like Kit Dale, Declan Moody, Belal Etiabari, and Kaya Rudolph battled through multiple matches throughout the day. Declan Moody ultimately secured his place on the team after a decisive submission victory in his final round-robin match.

The event also paid tribute to Luke Marko, a promising Australian grappler who recently passed away. The livestream provides updates on the matches and the accumulating scores, with the final team roster to be announced after the conclusion of the event. Fans can watch the full event, including the final matches and the announcement of the winning team, on the B-Team’s YouTube channel.
