Mon May 12 13:45:39 UTC 2025: ## Tirupati’s Gangamma Jatara Festival Sees a Digital-Age Revival

**TIRUPATI, INDIA (May 12, 2025)** – The centuries-old Gangamma Jatara folk festival in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, is captivating audiences both old and new. This vibrant annual event, centered around the Thathayagunta Gangamma temple, is a spectacle of color, rhythm, and devotion. Devotees arrive adorned in unique attire, their bodies smeared with charcoal, lime paste, vermilion, and sandalwood paste, often covered in neem leaves. Some wear flower crowns and carry sticks, while others participate in cross-dressing as a homage to the goddess, a tradition recently highlighted in the film “Pushpa: The Rule.”

A highlight of the festival is the “Puli Vesham” performance on the penultimate day. Performers, dressed as tigers, enact dramatic fight scenes to the rhythm of traditional drums, showcasing a blend of theatrical performance and religious devotion.

While participation in traditional street dancing once transcended social boundaries, it declined over time due to changing social norms. However, the digital age has sparked a remarkable revival, with Gen Z devotees using smartphones and social media to share their experiences, creating a wave of online content showcasing the festival’s energy and traditions. Instagram reels, YouTube shorts, and Facebook stories are flooded with videos of young people dancing to the pulsating beats of the folk drums, ensuring the continuation of this ancient tradition for a new generation.
