**KOTTAYAM, Kerala – May 12, 2025** – After years of delays, the much-anticipated Science City project in Kozha, Kottayam, is set to open its first phase on May 29th, Higher Education Minister R. Bindu announced. The project, developed by the Kerala State Science and Technology Museum, encompasses a 30-acre site and features a state-of-the-art Science Centre.
The Science Centre boasts extensive facilities, including galleries on fun science, marine life, and emerging technologies; a 3D theatre; a science park; seminar halls; an innovation hub; and even an artificial dinosaur enclosure. Future phases will include a planetarium, motion simulator, and astronomical observatory.
The first phase, initially budgeted at ₹14.5 crore (a joint contribution from the central and state governments), has seen significant additional state investment of approximately ₹50 crore in supporting infrastructure. Construction was managed by the National Council of Science Museums. Plans for a second phase, with a proposed budget of ₹45 crore, are already underway.
Complementing the Science City is a Biodiversity Park, currently under development in collaboration with local panchayats and utilizing the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). This park will showcase a wide variety of Kerala’s native flora.
The project, initially conceived in 2014, faced numerous setbacks and political hurdles before finally reaching this milestone. The opening of the first phase marks a significant achievement for Kerala’s scientific and educational landscape.
