Mon May 12 15:03:34 UTC 2025: ## Tamil Nadu Reservation Debate: MP Challenges PMK’s Proposed SC Quota Increase

**Chennai, May 12, 2025** – A heated debate has erupted in Tamil Nadu over proposed changes to Scheduled Caste (SC) reservations. D. Ravikumar, general secretary of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and Villupuram MP, has publicly challenged a resolution passed by the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) at their Vanniyar Youth Conference. The PMK resolution called for a 2% increase in SC reservations.

Ravikumar, in a social media post, questioned the PMK’s methodology, arguing that the 2% figure is outdated and doesn’t reflect the current SC population. He cited the 2018-19 Tamil Nadu Household Panel Survey, which indicated that SCs constitute 23.7% of the state’s population, a significantly higher percentage than the figure used by the PMK. This discrepancy has ignited a political firestorm, with Ravikumar demanding clarification on the basis of the PMK’s proposed increase.
