The 24-foot cuddy cabin boat was discovered around 5 a.m. by the U.S. Coast Guard, who observed several individuals disembarking and fleeing towards Coast Blvd. and Prospect St.
Local surfer Jon Burland, who noticed the boat and a strong smell of gasoline, reported seeing a hazmat team, border patrol, police, and lifeguards responding to the scene. He later used a drone to film the abandoned vessel, documenting a gasoline jug and what appeared to be a car battery onboard. The boat remained on the beach for several hours before being towed away by Border Patrol.
Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agents from the Imperial Beach Station apprehended nine migrants, who are now undergoing processing for removal. CBP seized the boat. It remains unclear if any additional individuals were aboard.
